Best Places to Study at Johns Hopkins University

Apparently you're expected to take time from all the stuff going on at college to study. Unless your roommate is completely silent, you have sworn off IM and your neighbors are absent, you’re going to have a difficult time getting actual studying done in your own room. As a result, you will have to seek out alternative study spots, and there are some good ones. When the studying just ain’t happening, the Daily Jolt’s QuadRiot is a great source of procrastination because sometimes you need to go away to come back.  In the mean time here are some great places to cram!

  • Dorm Commons Rooms: Got serious work to do? Try your floor's study room. No windows to gaze out of, no AIM profiles to check, no ringing phones, and no TV. It's not fun in there, but believe in it, you'll get your work done. The one risk is that you will slip back into your room.
  • Study Rooms – Every floor on McCoy, Wolman, basement of AMR’s, and Building B has one. And of course, Charles Commons has them too.
  • The Library:  Wait really?  People study in the library?  YES, especially when you have dozens of them!  Pick and choose from this list, one has to meet your fancy.
  • Singles Room: There are many singles rooms spread around campus.  Chances are you will make a lot of friends your first year, a lot of which will have different schedules from you.  If you have a particularly annoying roommate or are not able to study in your room, go to a friends single and try to study there.  This will help you in two ways.  There will nobody in the room to bug you and you probably won’t want to be invasive and mess with his/her stuff therefore actually getting your work done.
  • The Quads: The Upper and Lowers quads are great places to find a lovely little grass spot to plot down and read on. Not the most productive spot on campus, but maybe the most enjoyable way to study. You won't feel like you're wasting a gorgeous day sitting inside studying. Bring a blanket and you can enjoy a nice spring day and study at the same time. Just watch out for the Frisbees.
  • Albert D. Hutzler Reading Room: This is what people mean when they say “The Hut.” It’s great because its open on a 24-hour basis. It’s in Gilman Hall, across from the Eisenhower library. Best of all, it’s equipped with high ceilings and stained-glass windows. Think of it as the Church of Academia.
  • One World Café: Leave the over processed EasyMac at home and head over to this animal friendly Wi-Fi free spot. It’s received high rankings from the city paper when it comes to food and might just give you that extra bit of fuel after a weekend of partying. The coffee is Fair-Trade and the food’s organic, so both your conscious and your body will stay clean.
